Recycling Collection and Disposal Ordinance and Recycling Areas Ordinance
At the Council meeting of May 5, Public Works staff will propose to Council an amendment to the current Garbage and Recycling Collection and Disposal Ordinance (Chapter 6.24) and to the Recycling Areas ordinance (Chapter 9.16).
The primary purpose of the amendments is to require certain businesses to recycle organic waste. State AB 1826 mandates will affect most California cities beginning in April 2016 and will be fully implemented by January 2020. Due to the large proportion of food related businesses in Cupertino, there is an opportunity to accelerate AB1826 organic volume thresholds and timelines without too much inconvenience to Cupertino businesses. Please review the presentation to Cupertino Chamber of Commerce on March 6, 2015 for AB1826 requirements and proposed City of Cupertino ordinance requirements.
In 2014, Cupertino businesses recycled approximately 6,600 tons of organic material out of their waste streams. This material was collected, composted and offered to Cupertino residents for their use. The City and Recology estimate that an additional 3,800 tons annually can feasibly be collected by 2017.
Your comments on the proposed amendments are requested by April 20, 2015.
