About Elections

General Municipal Elections in Cupertino are held in November of even numbered years. The elected officers of the City of Cupertino consist of five Councilmembers who are elected "at large" to overlapping four-year terms. The offices of Mayor and Vice Mayor are filled annually by election of the Councilmembers.

November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election

The Elections Official has furnished nomination papers to the incumbents for each open office. The City of Cupertino is not subject to redistricting. Therefore, redistricting does not affect the eligibility for an incumbent to run for an open office.

Notice of Automatic Recount

The automatic recount has been completed for the Cupertino City Council contest. The contests for Cupertino City Council and Palo Alto City Council required automatic recounts, where the margin of victory for the candidates was either less than 0.25% of the total number of ballots cast or less than 25 votes. The recounts were completed and the results are included in the official results, as certified by the County of Santa Clara Registrar of Voters’ Office (ROV).

The official election results and detailed reports focusing on overall turnout, turnout by precinct, and more, can be found on the ROV website at www.sccvote.org and below under Election Results. The automatic recount result reports are posted publicly online: https://vote.santaclaracounty.gov/elections/current-recount-status

**********************************

The Cupertino City Council Council contest on the November 5, 2024, General Election ballot has qualified for an automatic recount under County of Santa Clara Board Policy No. 3.63. This policy generally requires the County of Santa Clara Registrar of Voters (ROV) to conduct automatic, manual recounts in certain local elections where the margin of victory is either less than 0.25 percent of the ballots cast or less than 25 votes, to help ensure the accuracy of election results.

Starting Monday, November 25, 2024, ROV will conduct the recount of contests at the office located at 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2, San Jose, CA, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The recount will continue daily until completed. The results of the automatic recount will be posted on the ROV's website upon completion. To observe the process, please contact Balinda Martinez to make the necessary arrangements at (408) 234-7527 or at balinda.martinez@rov.sccgov.org.

This automatic recount policy does not preclude any voter-requested recounts from being initiated per California law, nor does it affect the payment or recovery of costs associated with such voter-requested recounts.
