The Tamien Innu (Tamien Trail), formerly known as the Junipero Serra Trail, is one of the trail segments that would make up “The Loop.” It will provide an off-street bicycle and pedestrian facility that runs parallel to the existing Junipero Serra Channel and Calabazas Creek and provide a connection between the Don Burnett Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge and Vallco Parkway. On Tuesday, February 5, 2019, City Council unanimously voted to adopt Resolution No. 19-020, which approved the draft Feasibility Study dated December 14, 2018.

Project Description

The project will be constructed in three segments; East, Central and West. The eastern segment begins at the trail head on Vallco Parkway and extends to the east side of Wolfe Rd. The Central section is located between Wolfe Rd and De Anza Blvd and will include an undercrossing at Wolfe. The West segment begins at the west side of De Anza Blvd and extends to the Don Burnett Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge at Mary Ave.

BKF Engineering has been retained to provide a conceptual design for the East and Central segments. The conceptual design is expected to be presented for public comment in May of 2021. A community meeting schedule is provided below.

The East and Central segments will be partially funded through the Measure B Bicycle & Pedestrian Capital Projects Competitive Grant Program administered by Valley Transportation Authority. The City was selected to receive a total of $6.12 Million in Measure B funds.

The City has held three meetings to discuss the conceptual design of the trail facility, parallel to the existing Junipero Serra Channel, from De Anza Blvd to Vallco Parkway. Each session had a specific attendance group: the fist focused on obtaining input from residents in proximity to the east segment. The 2nd meeting will focus on obtaining input from residents in proximity to the central segment, and the 3rd is citywide. Although each session has a targeted attendance group, it is open to the public.

April 13, 2023 |Update NEW!

At the March 21, 2023 City Council Meeting, the City Council unanimously approved the name change from I-280 Trail to Tamien Innu (Tamien Trail).

January 6, 2023 |Update

The City of Cupertino is considering a name change for the I-280 Trail. With the name change, the City hopes to select a name that reflects Cupertino's history, culture, and residents.

At the May 18, 2022, Bicycle Pedestrian Commission Meeting, the commission discussed the name change. It concluded that a survey allowing residents to participate in selecting a new name would be the best course of action.

The City is collecting community input from Friday, January 6 through Monday, January 30, about this potential name change. Select the top choice you like best by taking a short survey at https://engagecupertino.org/i-280-trail

This survey is scheduled to close on January 30, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

May 16, 2022 |Update

INITIAL STUDY/MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION

The City of Cupertino, as the Lead Agency, has prepared an Initial Study for the I-280 Trail in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The Initial Study evaluates the possible environmental impacts of the proposed I-280 Trail project.
